The Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA) has handled 555 drowning cases in the last three years.

A PACDA official said that maximum cases were handled during the summer months. 'We received 113 distress calls last year, 150 calls in 2014 and 292 calls in 2013,' the official said.

The authority has carried out the maximum number of rescue operations (107) in Muscat with 34 cases in 2015, 35 in 2014 and 38 in 2013.

Speaking about the reasons for drowning, the official said, 'These cases occur because people do not take precautions. A lot of them enter the sea or wadis even if they do not know how to swim or many go swimming during high tides and in the areas marked unsafe.

'We have rescued people from the sea, wadis and dams and from cars stuck in swirling flood waters during rain. People should swim only in designated areas. Even in swimming pools, there should be fixed ladders and metal grips. Children should always be allowed to swim under a trained person's supervision.'
