Oman- Thunderstorms, rains to bring down mercury

Soaring summer temperatures are likely to come down with the Met office on Sunday predicting rains and thunderstorms in several wilayats adjoining the Al Hajar mountains over the next two days.

The Met also issued an advisory on Sunday for thunder and sandstorms in several places including Buraimi, Fahud, Rustaq, Ibra, Qarn Alam, Jaloni, Samail, Bahla, Marmul, Ibri, Nizwa, Mudhaibi, Haima, Sininah, Saiq, Zamaim, Bidiyah, Yanqul, Jebel Shams, Al Hamra and Izki.

Low level clouds covered a large part of northern Oman as well as Dhofar on Sunday, Met office stated, with rains reported from Mahdah in Buraimi, Rustaq, Yanqul, Jebel Akhdar, Al Awabi and Ibri.

The top five hottest places on Saturday were Muqshin 47.9C, Sininah 46.9C, Fahud 46.5C, Ibri 46.3 C and Buraimi 46.1C. Ibri and Fahud at 46C were hottest on Sunday, with Nizwa, Buraimi, Adam, Mudhaibi, Haima, and Marmul all reported to have 45C. While Khasab, Yanqul, Sohar, Suwaiq, Rustaq, Samail, Bahla, Ibra and Amerat recorded temperatures above 40C, Khasab witnessed the hottest night at 38C.

The Met office stated that along the coastal areas of the Sea of Oman, wind will be northeasterly and light to moderate during day becoming light at night. It will be southwesterly and moderate along the coastal areas of the Arabian Sea. While over rest of the sultanate, the wind will be easterly to southeasterly and light to moderate.

In its forecast for Monday, the Met office predicted cloudy skies over Dhofar governorate and adjoining mountains with intermittent drizzle and fog formation over the mountains. 'Mainly clear skies over rest of the sultanate with chances of convective clouds development with isolated rain over parts of Al Hajar mountains and adjacent wilayats during afternoon,' it stated.
