UN envoy holds talks with Yemeni stakeholders in Kuwait

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, July 17 (KUNA) -- The UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmad on Sunday held a meeting with the delegations of the Yemeni Ansarullah movement and the General People's Congress as part of the Yemen consultations Kuwait has been hosting.

Later today, the envoy will meet with the delegation representing the Yemeni government.

Ould Cheikh Ahmad will discuss with the Yemeni stakeholders a host of political, security and humanitarian topics on the agenda of the "Kuwait consultations," in addition to the safeguards sought by the government delegation, namely acknowledgement of the legitimacy of Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and the UN Resolution 2216.

Sunday evening, the UN envoy and the Kuwaiti Acting Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah will discuss latest developments in Yemen and means to push ahead efforts for a political comprehensive and final solution to the crisis in the country.

The UN-brokered intra-Yemeni peace talks resumed here Saturday after a two-week stoppage period.

On June 29, the UN envoy announced stopping the talks till July 15 (yesterday). Yet it was postponed until Saturday due to the government's delegation refusal to participate. The talks first began in Kuwait on April 21.

The envoy yesterday called on the parties involved in the consultations to take decisive decisions to authenticate their intentions for resolving the Yemeni crisis.

Ould Cheikh Ahmad, addressing the session of resumed consultations among the parties, said the groups should substantiate good intentions for settling the crisis according to the UN Security Council Resolution 2216, other relevant resolutions, the GCC Initiative and Its Implementing Mechanism, and the outcome of the Yemeni National Dialogue.

Expressing gratitude to the parties for coming anew to the negotiating table, the UN envoy confirmed that the new round of talks, expected for another two weeks, would focus on "maintaining cessation of combat actions in a full and comprehensive manner, activate the pacification committee and other commissions namely the military one tasked with overseeing the (fighters') withdrawal, arms handover and opening safe passages for dispatch of humanitarian aid."
