Japan logs 61pct rise in imports from Iran over May

(MENAFN) Iran's crude oil outbound shipments to Japan jumped 61 percent in May from a year earlier, thus Japan took in 308,000 bpd of Iranian crude in the period, 117,000 bpd more than what it shipped in a year earlier.

The Islamic Republic sits on the fourth place after Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar among the exporters of crude to the world's 2nd largest economy, which brought in 3.32 million barrels per day (mbd) throughout May.

Japan was one of the top clients of Iranian oil with 338,000 bpd of imports before sanctions on the Republic in 2012, however, during years of bans, the Asian nation continued to import crude from Iran, though at limited volumes.

After the removal of sanctions, Asian imports of Iranian oil have risen sharply, not to mention that Iran's oil flows to Europe have also begun to pick up after a slow start, plus its oil output has already hit the highest level in the last five years.
