OIC Supports Constitutional Legitimacy in Turkey


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Jeddah, July 16 (QNA) - The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) expressed its support for the elected government under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
It reiterated its rejection of any attempt to destabilize Turkey, the security and stability of which is the mainstay of security and stability in the region and the Muslim world, OIC said in a statement today.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is following with great concern serious developments in Turkey – an OIC Member State and the current Chair of its Islamic Summit. It monitored closely the attempt of some military elements to stage a coup against the country's democratic institutions, for which the Turkish people fought and sacrificed a great deal, the statement added.
The OIC recalled the fundamental principles of its Charter, which underscores the need to protect constitutional legitimacy and calls for the promotion of good governance, democracy, human rights, fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law.
The OIC also stressed the need to respect the will of the Turkish people and to resolve differences through constitutional institutions as called for in the OIC Charter and that of the United Nations; and the key necessity to protect the national interest as exhibited in the political and economic status Turkey represents, from the the resort to violence and putting civilian lives and property at risk.
