US working with Turkey to resume air operations at Incirlik air base

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, July 16 (KUNA) -- In response to the Turkish government's closure of its airspace to military aircraft out of Incirlik, US officials are working with the Turks to resume air operations for coalition aircraft "as soon as possible," Pentagon Spokesperson Peter Cook said Saturday.

In the meantime, the US Central Command is making adjustments to use other facilities in the region to launch units against the so-called Islamic State as part of Operation Inherent Resolve.

"US facilities at Incirlik are operating on internal power sources, and a loss of commercial power to the base has not affected base operations," Cook said.

"All indications at this time are that everyone is safe and secure," Cook's statement added. "We will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of our service members, our civilians, their families and our facilities." (end) ak.rk
