Al Jazeera live telecast of UN leaders' debate a global draw


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: The first internationally televised live UN leaders"; debate of 10 candidates aired by Al Jazeera Media Network on Tuesday has drawn world-wide media attention.

The debate triggered discussions and interactions of audience on social media platforms. Interaction with the #ALUNDeabtes exceeded one million within 24 hours, and the hashtag was mentioned in over 330 million tweets in different languages, along with the live streamed on Al Jazeera YouTube.com.

The debate titled ‘Leading the United Nations: A Global Town Hall with UN Secretary-General Candidates"; was broadcast in partnership with United Nations General Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft.

As the selected broadcast partner of the UN, Al Jazeera aired the debate stream and report on its all digital platforms, mobiles and media network, including Al Jazeera English, Al Jazeera Arabic, Al Jazeera Mubashar, Al Jazeera Balkans and AJ+.

The debate offered golden opportunity for worldwide audiences 'to watch, listen and follow the candidates or the position of the next UN Secretary-General outlining their 'visions on the future impact of the UN on the lives of seven billion people in the countries it represents” as Al Jazeera stressed.

The debate";s live feed was also offered to UN Television and other media carriers throughout the world.

The discussion between the candidates raised issues that have devastating effects around the world including civil wars, terrorism, refugees fleeing their homes, catastrophic climate change, and ecological disasters, among others.

Al Jazeera launched a special blog for the debate which includes opinion articles and analysis, in addition to the special live programme on Al Jazeera English covering the debate and providing the audience a platform for discussion and interaction.
