LONDON, 14th July, 2016 (WAM) -- The six GCC states are making a "substantial and continued contribution" to aid for Syrian refugees, according to a British Government Minister.

In a written answer yesterday to a question in the House of Lords, Lady Anelay of St. Johns, a Minister of State in the British Foreign Office, noted, "We recognise and welcome the substantial and continued contribution made by Gulf Cooperation Council, GCC, states to the humanitarian aid response for Syria and the large numbers of Syrians already in the Gulf."

The Minister was answering a question from Lord Roberts of LLandudno, a member of the opposition Liberal Democrats, about what steps the British Government was taking to encourage Gulf states to accept asylum seekers from Syria.

"The Gulf states are now home to almost one million Syrians, and Gulf states have pledged more than US$3 billion in humanitarian assistance," Lady Anelay said, adding that "Kuwait co-hosted the London Donor Conference in February, 2016, where Gulf states pledged US$739 million."
