Stress is one of the increasingly prevalent factors in modern life that adversely affects health in more ways than one.

Thankfully, medical science has now developed a set of techniques to identify stress and manage it effectively. KIMS Oman Hospital, as part of its continued commitment to offering superior healthcare solutions, has taken up stress management as one of its core competencies.

Managing stress starts with its identification. Symptoms of stress include general weakness, overall fatigue, muscle and joint pain, stomach pain, loss of appetite, headache, anxiety, irritability, anger and so on. In the long term, it can lead to high blood sugar and pressure levels, sleep issues and, in some cases, even a heart attack.

Everyday life has no dearth of factors that can cause stress. Work pressure, long working hours, lack of proper family support, illness and hospitalisation of family members can all increase stress levels manifold.

Dr Vrunda Janardhan, general physician at KIMS Oman Hospital, highlights some of the common signs seen in stress-affected individuals. 'There are physical signs including weight gain or loss, unexpected hair loss, heart palpitations and high blood pressure. Additionally, there are emotional signs such as mood swings, anxiety, depression and unhealthy coping strategies like consuming alcohol or taking drugs etc.'

How should stress be handled effectively? In some cases, it requires only simple changes in daily life. In some others, proper professional stress-relieving techniques are needed. Dr Vrunda added, 'We employ various healthy coping techniques to manage stress. There are physical exercises like yoga and daily workout. Meditation, breathing and the use of guided imagery can result in improved relaxation. Talk and pet therapies are also part of counselling.'

Some of the easy stress busters for daily life include the following:

Write: Try to write about what causes makes you stressful. If you can identify the factors, you can also handle them better.
Express your feelings: Laugh, cry, talk and, yes, get angry. Talk to your friends, family members or a counsellor about your feelings in a positive way to relieve stress.

Enjoy: Do something you like. Do something you are passionate about. It can be a hobby, a creative activity, a game etc.

Exercise: Regular exercise can help you relieve your stress to a great extent.

Dr Vrunda, an expert in stress management, brings with her a blend of profound experience and the comprehensive knowledge she gained while working for years in various healthcare institutions as well as academic organisations in India and the USA.
