Report: Over 800 Syrian refugees from Turkey relocated in EU
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, July 13 (KUNA) -- Since April, a total of 802 Syrians have been resettled from Turkey to several EU countries, the European Commission announced Wednesday.
In total 8,268 persons had been resettled by 11 July under the EU resettlement scheme of July 2015, mainly from Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan. They have been received by 20 EU member states.
The EU's executive body in a statement noted that although this constitutes positive progress and shows that EU Member States are stepping up their efforts, it still falls far short of the Commission's proposed target of relocating 6,000 people per month.
"EU Member States are not yet meeting the commitments they made under the EU relocation decision," it said.
Meanwhile, Dimitris Avramopoulos, EU Commissioner in charge of Migration and Home affairs presented proposals today to complete the reform of the Common European Asylum System.
"The reforms we are presenting today are about making sure we have the tools to better manage migration, in all its aspects, in the medium and long term," he told a press conference. (end) nk.mt
