Bahrain makes arrests in Eker blast case

MANAMA, 13th July, 2016 (WAM) -- Police investigations in Bahrain have led to the arrest of a number of those suspected of planning and executing a terrorist blast on June 30th in East Eker near the Sheikh Jaber Al Subah Highway towards Nuwaidrat.

According to the Bahrain News Agency, BNA, the blast caused the death of a Bahraini woman who was driving on the opposite side of the road towards Sitra. Shrapnel from the bomb penetrated her head causing her to crash her car into an iron barrier in the middle of the road. Three of her children who were with her in the car were injured. A second car was damaged in the explosion, as were some nearby shops and both public and private property.

Those arrested have been named as Hassan Jassim Hassan Al Haiki, 35, and Hussain Ibrahim Ali Hussain Marzooq, 26. Both are also suspected of having received military training in the assembly of explosives, planting of bombs and the use of weapons in Iran.

Further suspects include Hussain Ahmed Abdullah Ahmed Hussain, 27, who works for a private company. He is a fugitive in Iran and has close links with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. He was previously convicted in a number of cases related to bomb making and murder.

Investigations have revealed that the military-grade explosive device was hidden inside a bag under a billboard. The blast emitted a wide spread of shrapnel able to penetrate bodies and metal. Metal balls from the device were found up to 120 meters from the blast area.
