UAE is key participant in regional security: paper

DUBAI, 11th July, 2016 (WAM) -- Increasing endemic political violence and uncertainty in the Middle East and many other parts of the world make it increasingly hard for well-intended states to pursue rational, political solutions. In this situation it is important that states supporting the global order are able to enforce the rule of law when faced with dire necessity, which is why regional players need to have effective and practised treaties with the world''s major powers, the Gulf News said in an editorial today.

"Most Gulf states have unilateral military relationships with a variety of powers, but the most important operational relationship is with NATO, because that is the working protocol under which these states send their military into action and under which any partners also need to operate."

The paper went to say that this is why it is important that the UAE attended last week''s NATO summit in Poland as an observer when the world''s premier military alliance reviewed a range of significant threats. "The UAE has already proved willing to contribute to international efforts to combat violence and mayhem, such as its long stint as an active partner in NATO-ISAF in Afghanistan. NATO used this summit to review how to combat a wide range of threats, including the ever-more active threat of terrorism and even preparing to deal with cyber threats, as well as more conventional threats, such as an increasingly hostile Russia."

It was the UAE''s second time at a NATO summit as an observer after the previous summit two years ago, and continued that body''s strategic shift from being a purely reactive alliance committed to the defence of the democracies of the North Atlantic to a more pro-active alliance committed to seeking out threats before they strike. "To support this shift, NATO is looking to build partnerships with non-NATO states and has invited about 60 such partners, of which the UAE has proved to be a particularly significant participant thanks to its willingness to come forward.

NATO Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, said that NATO is actively concerned with how to handle an increasingly dangerous world, with continuing terrorism and turmoil to the south of the alliance in Iraq, Syria and North Africa.

The paper concluded, "In this context, the UAE is well placed to contribute to the planning of any NATO security initiatives for the region, that also range from how to support other ways of combatting terror such as de-radicalising people, and more conventional intelligence sharing and prevention programmes. It is all part of the world coming together to resist terror and chaos."
