Turkey calls for safeguarding nations' heritage


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ISTANBUL, July 10 (KUNA) -- Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim on Sunday urged the international community to support the UNESCO in its efforts to safeguard priceless treasures of mankind.

Premier Yildrim, in a videotaped message addressed to participants in the 40th session of UNESCO''S World Heritage Committee, hosted by Istanbul on july 10-20, said nations'' heritage treasures have been annihilated with wars and construction. Due to this situation, UNESCO shoulders greater responsibilities to safeguard the relics, he stressed.

Participants in the meeting have highlighted destruction inflicted on antiquities in war-ravaged countries, namely Syria and Iraq.

Istanbul hosts some of Turkey''s priceless historic treasures, dating back to the Ottoman empire and earlier civilizations. (end) ta.rk
