Kashmir death toll rises to 16 as protests continues

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW DELHI, July 10 (KUNA) -- Local media reports said that the death toll in the Indian security forces'' action during the widespread clashes and continuing since Friday in the North Indian state of Kashmir reaches 16 people.
Indo Asian News Agency reported quoting a high level local police officer that five people were killed today including one youth in the firing of security forces and four others who had sustained deadly injuries during Saturday''s protests. The death toll in the ongoing clashes between thousands of Kashmiri people who came on streets protesting the killing of separatist leader Burhan Wani and the Indian security forces reached 16.
Indian authorities had announced that 11 protesters were killed by the retaliatory fire of Indian security personnel on Saturday as clashes erupted in different parts of the state just after the funeral of Wani in his home town city of Tral. Wani represents the disenchanted new generation youth in the Valley and made calls through social networking sites to take up arms against the Indian government.
The security authorities in India reimposed curfew and internet in mobile phones were suspended. On her part, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed her sorrow over the death of youths during protests and extended her condolences to the bereaved family members and requested the people in the Valley to maintain calm.
She also urged the police and the paramilitary forces not to use excessive forces to avoid death or injury of protesters.
The central government in New Delhi, meanwhile, dispatched six Central Reserve Police Forces to Kashmir to boost the security cover and maintain law and order following the widespread violence in the Valley. Home Minister in the federal government Rajnath Singh appealed to the people to remain calm and pledged that the central authorities are helping the State government to bring normalcy the Valley.
