UNICEF supports education in Jordan with USD 39.4 mln


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) AMMAN, July 9 (KUNA) -- Jordan on Saturday announced a grant agreement with the UN Children''s Fund (UNICEF) worth USD 39.4 million, to support education in the Kingdom, to stand the repercussions of the Syrian refugees'' plight.

The money will back efforts by the Ministry of Education to offer better services to children affected by the Syrian crisis, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Emad Fakhouri said.

It is part of the outcome of the Syria donors conference held in London in February, he added.

According to Fakhouri, the agreement signed with the UNICEF will help enhance the capabilities needed for drawing up policies as well as planning for qualitative and safe education, through promoting skills of service provider in the sector.

In addition, the grant will also help maintain and expand school playgrounds, as well as buying equipment and furniture, together with improving work conditions for teachers.

The London conference decided that Jordan would receive USD 2/.1 billion over three years, USD 700 annually, besides USD 300 million to back the state budget.

It will also offer the Kingdom grants worse 1 billion for the education sector. (end) ab.msa
