The Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA) has been handling ten fire incidents on an average every day since 2011.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, an official from PACDA said, ''Our teams handled 18,850 fire incidents between 2011 and 2015. So, on an average we have been handling ten fire incidents every day since 2011.''

The official said that electrical short circuit was one of the most common causes of fire. ''In many cases, we found that fires were either caused due to overloading of electrical sockets, overuse of extension cords or careless handling of electrical appliances.''

Negligence is another reason for fires. ''A lot of people fail to handle electrical appliances as recommended by manufacturers. We also handle many cases of vehicles catching fire as people do not maintain radiators. Faulty, old and even outdated electrical appliances can cause fire. Improper storage of electronic items in warehouses can also lead to fire.''

The official added that there are many old buildings in the country that lack fire safety measures. ''Our officials regularly inspect old buildings from time to time to ensure fire safety equipment are in place. We also work with local authorities to ensure that all buildings have safety mechanisms in place to avoid any untoward incidents.''

He said that all new buildings must be equipped with fire safety measures as stated in the booklet Requirements of Prevention and Protection Against Fires in Facilities. ''This booklet can be collected from the Directorate of Protection From Dangers of Fires at PACDA or any other PACDA office across the country,'' the official said.
