'Walking for Water' Philanthropy Pilgrimage Travels Through Morocco

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) A man walking from Denmark to Tanzania to raise awareness for the world water crisis is now passing through Morocco on his way to Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to WHO, 2.6 billion people do not have access to clean drinking water or simple sanitation systems. This ''philanthropy pilgrimage,'' called Walking for Water, plans to raise enough money to provide a reliable water source for a village in Tanzania.

Charlie Uldahl Christensen began his journey in Esbjerg, Denmark on May 18 last year. His goal is to walk all the way to Lengasti, Tanzania. The 18,000 kilometer journey is his way of raising attention for the need for clean drinking water. Along the way, he hopes to get enough media attention to encourage potential sponsors to donate to the cause.

''I will walk so they don''t have to,'' said Christensen. ''18,000 kilometers, through 28 countries, for 2 and a half years.''

So far, he has travelled to eight different countries, including Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, and now Morocco. His route will follow the West coast of Africa, then cross the continent to Tanzania in East Africa.

He arrived in Tangier on ferry from Spain, and is currently in Agadir. Along the way, Christensen has been taking videos of his experiences and the diverse cultures that he encounters. All of the videos are posted to the Walking for Water Facebook page.

Villagers of Lengasti have to almost 40 kilometers every day to find water to drink and cook and clean with. They leave early in the morning, and come back in the evening. The water they find is often muddy and potentially unsafe.

''All the hours spent on walking for water is hours that cannot be spent on attending class, taking care of business, or developing their society in any way,'' Christensen said. ''The families who haven''t the resources to make someone spend all day gathering water cannot withstand the temptation of using the dirty water from the mud pits, water with all kinds of germs in it, risking health and life for themselves and their children.''

Walking for Water is entirely volunteer-run, and all of the donations go directly to their cause. For more information, check out the Walking for Water website.
