Doha: The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SCDL) Youth Panel served the Iftar meal to 500 construction workers in Al Rayyan this week. This was the third consecutive year that the SCDL collaborates with the Sheikh Thani Ibn Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) by putting up three Ramadan tents.

Located close to the construction sites of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar stadiums in the cities of Al Rayyan, Al Wakrah and Al Khor, these tents welcomed as many as 1,500 people on a daily basis for the post-sunset meal.

The 31 members of the Youth Panel, most of them themselves fast, saw this as an opportunity to show their gratitude to some of the construction workers contributing to the development of Qatar.

Fatima Al Naimi, a 15-year-old student from Qatar, joined the SCDL Youth Panel this year. She said: “This activity spoke to me on another level. I see these workers every day on my way to school, on my way back from school, but we never really interact in any way. Helping them and standing in their place was a really amasing feeling. They were very grateful. It was just amazing.”

“These workers help to develop our country. They’re doing a lot of work that we aren’t doing. This is a way to exprtess our gratitude to them,” she added.

The Youth Panel programme aims to inspire young people living in Qatar, irrespective of their nationality or background, and foster a sense of ownership and pride in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and in particular the legacy the tournament will leave.

With this goal in mind, the members of the 2016 SC Youth Panel set out to give Raf Thani volunteers a night off and took over by delivering all the logistics of the event from set up to completion. They unloaded food from the vans, prepared the mats where the guests are supposed to sit, distributed the food to each guest, and welcomed and accompanied each person to their seat.

The youngsters took the chance to talk to the workers and explain to them their experiences with the Youth Panel. They also discussed how this involves contributing to one’s community and promoting the culture of volunteering in Qatar, which will be essential to deliver a successful tournament.

Arwa Ibrahim Abdelaziz Omar Osman, 16, from Egypt, said: “It made me very happy to give Iftar to the people who have been working to make Qatar the best of the best.”
