Doha: Language learning was boosted at Doha College when students from Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) took part in a Language Enrichment Day that was overseen by British Ambassador Ajay Sharma.

The day was organised to allow students to experience Arabic, French, German and Spanish, the languages taught at Doha College, and to appreciate culture and customs of each country.

During the day students competed in houses and were asked to create a video of their chosen language as well as reciting poems, performing role play and finally a musical performance in French.

Mr Sharma said, “Languages were very important part of my life both in school and outside. Learning foreign languages opened up a world of books, TV and films and broadened my understanding of the world. I encourage you all to carry on learning; it is through language that we can understand different people and different cultures.”

As part of Doha College’s focus on high-performance learning, languages have been identified as a driver for developing enhanced learning skills”. Dr Steffen Sommer, Principal of Doha College, said. “We are introducing languages from our early years primary education from September 2016 and will continue this multi-language education throughout our secondary education for all students as part of this focus on higher performance learning.”

This Language Enrichment Day was organised by the Department of Languages at Doha College, which has six specialist teachers of Arabic, French, Spanish and German. Anna Davies, Head of the Languages Department at Doha College, explained: “Learning a language breaks down barriers and eliminates the fear of differences. It helps to enrich our appreciation of human diversity, which is essential in our multicultural and multilingual world.”The Peninsula
