Volunteer group, Basna Hawadith has taken the lead to distribute 300 ready-to-eat iftar meals in Muscat, Salalah and Ibri every day.

Basna Hawadith (Enough of accidents in English) was formed in 2013 keeping in mind the large number of road accidents that result from speeding before iftar time. Members of the group spread awareness among motorists on reducing speed to reach their destinations safely and break fast.

Nasser Saif al Jassasi, a member of the group said, ''Since our formation in June 2013, the number of volunteers in our group has touched 40.'' He said that the main goal of the group is to create traffic awareness and contribute in various ways to reduce the number of road accidents. ''During the holy month of Ramadan, we distribute iftar meals to motorists at gas stations, traffic intersections and roadsides in Muscat, Salalah and Ibri in Dhahirah. If it''s Seeb one day, it could be in Azaiba or some other place the next day.''

Jassasi said that the meals are distributed just before the muezzin calls for Maghrib prayer. ''We do this to ensure that motorists can break their fast on time. They can then continue their onward journey to their respective destination. We work from 1pm to 7pm and prepare 300 food packs every day for distribution.''

Basna Hawadith members work throughout the year to spread road safety awareness. Talking about the challenges faced, he said, ''It was a bit difficult in the initial years. Then, we got financial support from a private company and have the support of ROP as well,'' Jassasi said, adding that the initiative gives you peace at the end of the day. ''You know that you have done something good for the society and country.''
