Polls close in Britain's EU referendum, YouGov favors Remain over Leave


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) LONDON, June 23 (KUNA) -- Polls closed at 10 pm GMT and counting began in Britain''s historic referendum on the country''s membership in the European Union (EU).
A YouGov poll released at 10pm gave supporters of remaining in the EU a four-point lead over those seeking to quit the bloc.
The poll showed 52 percent of respondents favored staying in the economic and political bloc, while 48 percent preferred leaving.
Meanwhile, voters in Gibraltar region also favored Remain by 95.9 percent, according to the election commission. A total of 19,332 eligible voters in the region voted for Remain while 832 voted for Leave, with the turnover amounting to 83 percent, the committee said, citing media reports.
Initial results are expected within three hours of the polls closing. Final results will be announced Friday morning. (end) mrn.msa
