Oman- State Council approves draft GCC veterinary law

The State Council approved the draft GCC veterinary law at its 11th session on Monday even as it prepares for a joint session with Majlis A''Shura to discuss the draft Omani Penal Code on Tuesday.

The session was chaired by H E Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh al Manthri.

The veterinary law will affect areas such as medicines given to animals. Officials said the law will help regulate the work of private sector companies engaged in the production of veterinary products in Oman.

It also aims to regulate the import and export of veterinary products, in order to provide protection to the livestock operations in Oman and the GCC.

The law was studied by the State Council''s social committee, chaired by Dr Hamad bin

Sulaiman bin Salim al Salmi.

Dr Salmi said that the committee agreed with most articles of the draft law and inserted some modifications. The council removed three articles of the draft law during Monday''s session.

On Tuesday, the joint State Council and Majlis A''Shura session will debate nine articles from the penal code that they disagreed upon. One of the main disagreements is over life sentences. Majlis A''Shura wants life terms to be limited to 25 years.

The State Council also approved its 2017 budget at Monday''s meeting.

At the beginning of the session, the State Council chairman welcomed and congratulated the members for the holy month of Ramadan and the advent of Eid al Fitr.

He prayed for the good health and happiness of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, steady progress and prosperity of the people and prosperity, good fortune and harmony in the sultanate.
