UAE- Khalifa Foundation concludes airlift to Socotra, Yemen

SOCOTRA, 19th June, 2016 (WAM) -- The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, KF, has concluded its current airlift project to Socotra Island, which included 12 cargo planes in four phases loaded with supplies.

The airlift carried 400 tonnes of Ramadan foodstuff and relief packages to the population of Socotra Island, Yemen, in alleviation of their circumstances due to floods that claimed the lives of many and destroyed a number of houses, sweeping through vital facilities on the island.

The aid is in implementation to directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and the follow up of H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation.

The official source said that the fourth and last phase of the airlift was completed after the arrival of three cargo planes carrying 100 tonnes of food, which was then distributed through a network of distribution centres in Socotra.

He explained that the previous three phases of the airlift included nine cargo planes carrying 300 tonnes of food which was distributed to the population through various centres. He said that about 10,000 people had received aid from 15 distribution centres, under the supervision of Brigadier Salem Abdullah Issa, the Governor of Socotra.

Beneficiaries of the aid said that the assistance came at the right time due to the dire conditions being suffered by the population.
