Second phase of Italy's municipal elections begin


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ROME, June 19 (KUNA) -- Polls opened for the second phase of the Italian municipal elections seen as a test for Prime Minister Matteo Renzi''s rule.

The voting process, expected to last till 11:00 p.m. local-time, is expected to involve some 8.6 million voters casting their ballot at 125 municipalities in some six regional capitals in addition to 15 other provincial areas.

The results of the first phase in Rome, which began on June fifth, saw candidate for the anti-establishment 5 Star Movement (M5S) Virginia Raggi coming in first with 35.2 percent of the votes, ahead of main rival from the Democratic Party''s candidate Roberto Giachetti who gained 24.9 percent. Giachetti is seen as the favorite candidate for Prime Minister Renzi.
