Wall Street falls as crude oil soars

U.S. equites and crude oil headed in different directions on Friday.

By the close the Dow Jones had fallen 0.3% to 17,675. The NASDAQ was softer at 2071, while the NASDAQ dropped 0.9% to 4800.

The volatility in oil prices remains very high, as the markets brace for this weeks UK vote on its status within the European Union.

Brent crude futures jumped 4.3% to US$49.25 a barrel, with West Texas Intermediate climbing 3.8% to US$47.98 a barrel.

The previous session both of these benchmarks lost around the same value.

Electronic gold added 1.6% to US$1298 an ounce, and climbed above US$1300 an ounce intra-session.
