DOHA: In a rare gesture, members of the Pakistani community have donated over QR1m to Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) to provide free education to poor students worldwide.

Donations were made by 13 expatriates at a function on the sidelines of the ongoing Ramadan festival at Ezdan Mall yesterday and handed over to Ali bin Yusuf Al Kuwari, Head, Financial Resources Development and Marketing, RAF.

The 10-day festival being held in collaboration with Ezdan Mall ends today.

It features religious programmes for the visitors. Famous Islamic scholars have invited to deliver lectures on relevant topics. Entertainment events for children are also being held.

RAF is providing free education to thousands of students under its initiative launched in more than 20 countries at a cost of QR10m.

The initiative ‘Al Ghaza Wa Noor’ (food and lights) enables thousands of children to go to schools while their families are being provided with financial support to avoid putting their children to work, RAF said yesterday.

Phase one of the project has been completed, benefiting over 18,000 students.
