Russian Defense Min. visits Hmeimim airbase in Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) AMMAN, June 18 (KUNA) -- Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu visited Saturday Hmeimim Airbase in Lattakia to inspect Russian forces and the S400 air defense missile system deployed in the Syrian city.
Shoygu has inspected the S400 air defense missile system in the airbase and the organization of the combat shifts at the aerial defense forces command center, the Syrian news agency (SANA) quoted Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov as saying.
He added that Shoygu also tasked the base''s command to provide all forms of support and assistance to locals more actively, particularly in towns besieged by terrorists and to hold talks with local leaders to expand the areas covered by the cessation of hostilities agreement.
He noted that the visit came upon orders from Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss boosting anti-terror cooperation with Syrian government.
Earlier, Shoigu by held talks with President Bashar Al-Assad over military cooperation between the two countries and the joint work to combat terrorist organizations on the Syrian territories.
"The meeting touched upon relevant issues of military and military-technical cooperation between the defense ministries of the two countries, as well as certain aspects of cooperation in the fight against terrorist groups operating on Syrian territory," the Russian Defense Ministry said in a press statement.
