Barcelona Festival of Song 2016


(MENAFNEditorial) XII Barcelona Festival of Song pays tribute to composer Enrique Granados and celebrates the centennial anniversary of prominent Latin American composers.



Barcelona, June 1st: On June 25th starts the 12th Edition of the Barcelona Festival of Song - an event internationally positioning itself as a place of reference for the study, research and performance of the Iberian and Latin American vocal repertoire in Spanish, Catalan and Portuguese.

The festival opens with the recital ''A century of Songs'', which pays homage to composers celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2016 and includes such renowned artists as Catalan Enrique Granados (1867-1916), Argentinian Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) Venezuelan Antonio Estvez (1916-1988) and Mexican Salvador Moreno (1916-1999).

This concert is a premiere of works commissioned by the festival from: Catalan composer Anna Cazurra (Barcelona, 1964) to the poems of Carles Duarte (Barcelona, 1959) and Brazilian composer Achille Picchis (Sao Paulo, 1954) art song to the poetry of Catalan Pere Casaldliga (Balsareny, 1928). The songs debut with performances by soprano Patricia Caicedo, tenor Lenine Santos and pianist Nikos Stavlas.

During the 2016 edition, a special prominence is given to Enrique Granados, on the composers 100th death anniversary. To commemorate this centenary, the festival presents a concert of Granados vocal music with mezzo-soprano Marisa Martins and pianist Mac McClure as well as a lecture in Spanish version by Walter Clark, a recognized expert and author of the biography of Enrique Granados.
As every year, the festival devotes a privileged space to the Brazilian art song, featuring two of the most prominent representatives of the repertoire, tenor Lenine Santos and pianist and composer Achille Picchi, who perform during this edition of the festival a concert of Brazilian music from the nineteenth century to today.

In 2016, for the first time in Catalonia a concert devoted entirely to the Costa Rican song is organised with tenor Ernesto Rodriguez and pianist Manuel Matarrita, the laureates of the top honors of their country. A novelty of the 2016 edition of the festival is the first ''Myths'' concert for violin and piano performed by Saaya Ikenoya and Nikos Stavlas, dedicated mostly to works by female composers from Japan, Catalonia, England and Argentina. Another musical treat is the performance of the remarkable Catalan guitarist Jaume Torrent presenting a program featuring works of Granados, Albeniz, Villa-lobos Heitor and his the ones of his own authorship will also be presented.

As every year, the festival organizes the Course of History and Interpretation of Iberian and Latin American Vocal Repertoire, attended by students and teachers from around the world. The lectures take place in the Residence d''Investigadores CSIC in Barcelona.

The festival is supported by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia, the Residence d''Investigadores CSIC, the Library of Catalonia, Caixaforum, l''Ayuntamiento of Barcelona and Corrales Pianos.

Celebrating the legacy of Enrique Granados

On March 24th 2016 we commemorate the centenary of Enric Granados death, an internationally celebrated composer and pianist. The Barcelona Festival of Song pays tribute to the figure by holding a concert dedicated to his vocal music, creating a website www.enricgranados.com and by releasing his biography, published by Editorial Boileau of Barcelona.

Granados biography entitled ''The Poet of the Piano'' was written by Walter Clark, a renowned musicologist from the United States, a visiting professor at the festival. The book, originally published in English by Oxford University Press, has been translated into Spanish by the musicologist and director of the festival Patricia Caicedo. The launch of the book in Spanish version takes place on July 4th in the Residence d''Investigadores in Barcelona and will be attended by Dr. Walter Clark, Eugenia Serra, director of the Library of Catalonia; Carlota Garriga of the Marshall Academy; Yolanda Guasch, director of Editorial Boileau and Dr. Patricia Caicedo, director of the Festival.

The concert entitled Homage to Granados takes place on June 27th in Room Levante Library of Catalonia, with the original piano of Enrique Granados. The interpreters are mezzo-soprano Marisa Martins and pianist Mac McClure, artists with great experience playing the repertoire of the famous composer.
