(MENAFN- The Peninsula) DOHA: Qatar University retained its ninth position in the third edition of ‘QS University Rankings: Arab Region’ report released yesterday by Quacquarelli Symonds, a global higher education analysts.

The report provides insights into the comparative performance of the 100 best universities in the region.

Saudi Arabia’s King Fahad University of Petroleum & Minerals remains the region’s best university, followed by Lebanon’s American University of Beirut (second); King Saud University (third), King Abdul Aziz University (fourth); and American University in Cairo (fifth).

The UAE competes with Saudi Arabia in the very highest echelons of the rankings; both feature four top-20 universities.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt are the two dominant nations, featuring 19 and 15 top-200 universities, respectively, taking over one-third of the available places; Iraq and Oman also feature top-20 universities.

The rankings measures universities according to nine metrics, acknowledging the particular challenges and opportunities universities must face within their region to become regionally and globally mobile.

It also aims to illuminate excellence achieved by universities making impact on a regional, if not yet a global, level.
