Lawyer's assistant held for harassing client's wife

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A lawyer''s assistant stood in the dock on Monday accused of sexually harassing and molesting a client''s wife.

The Egyptian defendant, 39, has been charged with molestation and trespass in the Court of First Instance.

The incident dates back to February 24, 2014.

The complainant, a 32-year-old Algerian, said she met the accused when her husband was in jail over a bounced cheque case. "The defendant worked for an Egyptian lawyer and was first sent to our house in Mirdiff to take me and my children to the public prosecution to work on my husband''s release on bond procedures."

But she claimed the visit, which should have been kept formal, soon turned into recurrent ''informal'' visits during which the legal assistant would offer her gifts and flowers and toys for her kids. "He would start conversations about his marital problems. I told him to stop harassing and bothering me because I am a married woman and it was not appropriate for him to treat me that way. He told me, however, that I am pretty and I had to keep going and forget about my husband as he would serve for a long time in jail. He asked me to go out with him on Valentine''s Day."

The housewife refrained from telling her husband about the man''s behaviour for fear it would cause trouble.

"I had to change my personal mobile and home numbers because of his constant harassment," she said.

One day, while her husband was in Abu Dhabi, the defendant knocked on her flat''s door. "I thought it was the kids who were then playing in the garden. But it was the defendant who barged inside while touching, groping and hugging me," she claimed.

The housewife hurt herself with a key holder (with a small-sized knife) she then held while trying to push the defendant away. "I hurt my shoulder. The defendant then ran outside after he heard my screams."

The Indian watchman in the building confirmed having seen the accused running out looking terrified 20 minutes after he visited the housewife''s flat.

The housewife did not report the legal assistant to the police at that time and did not tell her husband, either. But she complained against him later when his harassment would not stop.

The defendant''s eyeglasses, which he allegedly left behind as he ran out of the woman''s flat, is being used as evidence.
