The Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC) on Tuesday announced new ground handlers for Muscat and Salalah airports.

Swissport, and an Oman Air and Menzies Aviation joint venture will take over the ground handling operations at Muscat airport. The two companies will provide services for ten years beginning January 2017.

The Oman Air and Menzies Aviation joint venture will look after the ground handling operations at the Salalah Airport.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Sheikh Aiman bin Ahmed al Hosni, chief executive officer of OAMC said, ''We aim to be among the top 20 airports in the next five years and I am confident that these two firms will help us achieve that goal. This is the first time that two ground handlers will look after the services at Muscat International Airport after more than 43 years.''

He added that any airport that crosses over 5mn passengers annually must have two ground handling operators. ''In addition, the introduction of Swissport will translate into an additional 400-500 initial jobs that will be subject to Omanisation requirements.''

Mark Skinner, senior vice president, Middle East, Africa and Eurasia, Swissport said, ''This is our second venture in the Gulf after Saudi Arabia. We are looking forward to enter the Oman market which has great potential to grow in the next few years.

''With the new Muscat airport terminal opening, there is likely to be a passenger growth between five and ten per cent. We are a global player in this sector. People travelling from Russia and other European countries will relate to the services we will be offering at the Muscat airport.''
