Qatar- QRCS and WFP to provide aid for displaced Iraqis

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have teamed up to rescue the displaced Iraqi families in Al Anbar Governorate amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions due to unrest.

The initiative aims to provide basic food items to the families.

Baskets containing eight types of foodstuff, including flour, rice, and edible oil, were distributed to the beneficiaries. Each basket weighed 70kg.

Kitchenware was also provided to the displaced families so they can cook food for themselves.

More than 100,000 people in Al Anbar and those living in camps in the surrounding areas will benefit from the initiative.

“We are working closely with QRCS to ensure that necessary food continues to be delivered to the most vulnerable displaced Iraqi families in Iraq’s governorate, Al Anbar,” said Jane Pearce, WFP’s Country Director for Iraq.

“Since the crisis began, WFP and QRCS have extended their helping hands to the displaced people in Iraq.

“Now, we are coordinating to approach to maximum number of people with food and other forms of aid, and we look forward to further collaboration in the future to assist more people in need with life-saving assistance,” said Isa M Al Ishaq, Head, Human Resources, QRCS.

An agreement signed between WFP and QRCS will not only provide the targeted people with necessary assistance, but will also give hope to them by meeting their needs.

As Ramadan has begun, QRCS is also planning to distribute more than 1,000 food packages to the displaced Iraqis in Iraqi Kurdistan.

This assistance will be coordinated with WFP, to avoid duplication.

According to WFP, the emergency operations require $72.7m until the end of 2016 to meet the needs of the most affected people.

QRCS is still pursuing its immediate relief in Fallujah by distributing food aid to 1,500 families, with extra 1,500 food packages as a strategic emergency stockpile.

Also, five QRCS emergency mobile clinics have been dispatched to offer healthcare services for victims across the area.
