(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, June 7 (KUNA) -- A 22-year-old California man was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Tuesday for his attempt to fly to Syria and join the so-called Islamic State, the Department of Justice (DoJ) said in a statement.
Nicholas Michael Teausant was arrested in 2014 as he made his way to Canada "with the intent of continuing to travel to Syria," the DoJ said. 9 days later, "He pleaded guilty to the single count in the indictment without a plea agreement." After he serves his 12 years, Teausant will go through 25 years of supervised release.
"Mr. Teausant was fixated on violence as documented by his social media posts, his pre-arrest statements, and the nature of the group he attempted to join," said the prosecutor Phillip A. Talbert. "His conduct was misguided and unacceptable." (end) ys.ibi
