Qatar hopes for more efforts by Iraq to free kidnapped nat'ls

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) DOHA, June 5 (KUNA) -- Qatari Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani expressed hope on Sunday that the Iraqi authorities would intensify their efforts for the release of dozens of Qatari hunters who were kidnapped in southern Iraq six months ago.

During the meeting with Iraqi Defense Minister and Personal Envoy of Prime Minister Khaled Mutaib Al-Obeidi and his accompanying delegation, the Amir stressed the need of ensuring the safe return of the hostages to their homeland as soon as possible.

For his part, the Iraqi minister delivered a written message which highlighted the importance of bilateral relations between the two countries and means of enhancing and developing them, according to Qatar news agency (QNA).

He reassured the Qatari Amir that the Iraqi government is doing everything in its power to secure the release of abducted Qataris and return them to their country.

The meeting also reviewed a number of issues of common concern. Twenty-six Qatari hunters were kidnapped by gunmen from a desert camp in southern Iraq near the Saudi border in December; one of them, a member of Qatar's ruling family, has been freed in April. (end) nnd.mb
