UAE- Are you doing your bit for the environment?

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Change towards sustainable behaviour and energy conservation is expected to come from women, said an environment expert. Jens Nielsen, CEO of World Climate Ltd, said energy industry has been pushing lately for female speakers to "get a more balanced perspective".

"Energy and transport is very much dominated by men over 50, and it is important to stimulate female speakers to provide a new way of looking at things," said Nielsen. He added that women are more likely to save resources and show consideration to the environment. "Change towards sustainability is expected to come more from women," he said.

On the topic of global warming, Nielsen commented that statistical measures should be the point of reference.

"We have had the hottest weather in the past few years and the temperature keeps rising annually. It is hard to believe that the phenomenon is happening by itself." He added that the Middle East is most vulnerable due to its already hot climate.

Independent analyses by Nasa and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) revealed that Earth's 2015 surface temperatures were the warmest since modern record began in 1880. Temperatures in 2015 shattered the previous mark set in 2014 by 0.23 degrees Fahrenheit (0.13 Celsius).

Nielsen stated that curbing carbon emission will help prevent the Earth from getting warmer. He referred to the 2015 Paris Climate Conference agreement in keeping global warming below 2C as the hope global leaders are holding on to. "If we achieved a 1.5-degree rise in temperature for this century, the situation will look fine," he said.

Nielsen stressed that school and university education is the best facility to build a sustainable behaviour. Setting rules and regulations to change infrastructure and push for initiatives like green buildings will create the change.

"Next generation is expected to take over and become more sustainable," he said. "In the US, programmes and software are developing to stimulate people to think about sustainability."

Anjum Hasan, environment department head of Delhi Private School, said that some UAE schools have taken up steps to incorporate green education to their curricula.

She stated that student-targeted events and competitions held by local environment agencies did not only inculcate environmental awareness, "but has given a new face to today's environment".

"Students are our Green Ambassadors! They will not be told about sustainable development, but will see and work within it," she said.

Hasan stressed that collective effort is needed to make a change. "We all need to join hands immediately and fight the cause to find a solution."
