Emir attends Qatar University graduation


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani with officials and graduates at the ceremony at Doha Exhibition and Convention Center yesterday.



DOHA: Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani yesterday graced the men’s graduation ceremony of Qatar University’s (QU) Class of 2016 at Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC).

The Emir honoured 67 outstanding students who achieved a GPA of 3.50 and above. Accounting student Khaled Hosny Hosny scored the highest GPA of 3.98.

A total of 461 students graduating with bachelor’s, master’s and diplomas from different colleges received certificates from their deans in the presence of QU President Dr Hassan Rashid Al Derham, members of QU leadership, parents and well-wishers.

The ceremony also saw the graduation of the first cohorts of academic programmes, including BA Policy, Planning and Development; BBA Economics; B.Ed Secondary Education; and MSc Clinical Pharmacy and Practice.

Dr Al Derham congratulated the graduates and praised their hard work and determination that resulted in their success which he said is the “beginning of a new and exciting phase in your lives”.

“This comes at a time when QU is witnessing a period of transition, which is essential in light of fast-growing development in all sectors of society, particularly the economic development from which resulted changes in social, cultural and intellectual areas.

“It is important for us to keep abreast of society’s fast growth and needs by establishing a comprehensive vision for the future which aims to preserve and promote QU’s achievements while aligning them with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030,” he added.

Dr Al Derham said over the past 10 years, QU continued to advance its standing among the top universities in the world and achieved rankings successes, the most recent being named No. 1 in the Arab region in the Round University Rankings.

He said QU continued to develop academic infrastructure by establishing a Health Education Cluster that merges the colleges of Pharmacy, Medicine and Health Sciences to contribute to equipping the healthcare sector with qualified and well-trained professionals and enhancing its services.

In a speech, valedictorian Mohammed Ahmed Al Merri from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences expressed pride with QU which enjoys international recognition of accredited centres and gathers an elite of distinct professionals at local and international levels.

“On your behalf, I thank QU for giving us an education of such high quality in line with the highest international standards and best practices, and that has provided us with opportunities to unlock our potential and excel in our respective goals.

“Today, we embark on a new phase in our personal and professional lives and prepare to join the labour market and be the next generation of future leaders and loyal ambassadors of the university. Congratulations, classmates on a job well done,” he added.
