'X-Men' sequel tramples 'Alice' over Memorial Day weekend


(MENAFN- AFP) Superhero sequel "X-Men: Apocalypse" topped the North American box office in its debut over the four-day Memorial holiday weekend, raking in nearly $80 million, industry figures showed.

Disney's "Alice Through the Looking Glass" opened in the number two spot, selling $33.5 million in tickets, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.

"The Angry Birds Movie" was third, earning $24.6 million between Friday and Monday.

Another comic book-themed flick, "Captain America: Civil War", was fourth with $20 million while the comedy sequel "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising", grossed $11.4 million for fifth place.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were:

-- "The Jungle Book" ($9.5 million)

-- "The Nice Guys" ($8.3 million)

-- "Money Monster" ($5.6 million)

-- "Love and Friendship" ($3.1 million)

-- "Zootopia" ($1.1 million)
