Bollywood, sports celebs in Dubai's Yoga Day


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Indian Consulate and Dubai Sports Council are launching initiatives to celebrate International Yoga Day this year.

Consular General of India Anurag Bhushan made several special announcements at the conference held at Indian Consulate on Monday.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev will be the face of the event happening on June 18 at World Trade Centre with some other Bollywood and sports celebrities.

Yoga at Work

For stress free life professionals can do small breathing and stretching exercises at workplace. Right sitting and standing posture was also demonstrated by a yoga instructor at the event.

With the objective of improving health of the people and spreading awareness about yoga, the event will be supported by Shaikh Ahmad bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, president of the UAE Olympics committee and the president of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award.

Anurag Bhushan, Consular General India emphasised on adopting the practice in routine for better health conditions.

He said: "Yoga is a communion of mind and body and we are trying to better the health, happiness and harmony of the people in Dubai; we have seen last year people from different nationalities participating at the event which indicates that yoga is becoming popular in the city. This year we expect lot of celebrities and yoga gurus to turn up at the event."

International Yoga day is an initiative conceived by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to launch a special day for people who practice yoga across the world.

More than 170 countries including UAE, USA, China, Canada and KSA have supported the event.

Last year around 10,000 yoga enthusiasts participated at the event, this year it is expected to reach 20,000. To reach out to more and more people this year, social media and other platforms are being explored. Also, the Indian Consulate will keep small yoga sessions for media as well in the first week of June to promote the event.

"Children should be encouraged to practise yoga for combating health issues such as obesity. In order to perform well in studies children needs to get more focused and improve concentration, yoga can help them. We are looking at making this practice more of a sport activity for kids and adults," said Hessa Al Kous, Sports Event Planning Manager at Dubai Sports Council.

The event was concluded with small techniques of practicing yoga at work for good body, mind and soul.
