Two Omanis get WHO awards for exemplary work on tobacco control

Today is World No Tobacco Day and Oman has something to cheer about. Two Omanis connected to the field of tobacco control have been recognised for their efforts by World Health Organization (WHO). From the Eastern Mediterranean region, Oman's Sabah Mohammed al Bahlani and Issa Said al Kiyumi, members of State Council, were presented the World No Tobacco Day Awards, apart from four other organisations in the region.

Every year, WHO recognises individuals or organisations in each of its six regions for accomplishments in the area of tobacco control. This recognition takes the form of WHO Director-General Special Recognition Awards and World No Tobacco Day Awards. Dr Jawad al Lawati, a senior consultant and rapporteur of the National Tobacco Control Committee, told Muscat Daily, 'Sabah worked for years as director of health education and information in the Ministry of Health focusing extensively on raising awareness and education on the ill-effects of tobacco use. Kiyumi was the director general of customs, combating the menace of illicit tobacco products through border crossings.'

Sabah is also one of the founders and CEO of the Association of Early Intervention for Children with Disability, while Kiyumi was instrumental in launching and implementing the Bayan system that offers a comprehensive customs management system and single window for all border regulatory agencies in the sultanate.
