A Samail farmer has succeeded in harvesting Basmati rice after several attempts.

Seventy year old Said bin Khalfan al Maamari harvested 40kg rice on quarter acre of land. He told Muscat Daily that rice farming is feasible in Oman, but needs great care and is a water-intensive activity. 'I and my children worked hard. The cultivated area was on permanent irrigation,' the farmer from Samail's Al Khutuwa village said.

The crop took him five months January to May - to harvest. 'Five months are enough to plant and harvest the rice crop. In future, I want to study how rice cultivation can be done feasibly for commercial purposes. This harvest has been a dream come true for me. I am happy that my efforts have borne result.'

Maamari isn't stopping at rice. He wants to try his success with clove trees. 'These were planted by Omanis in Zanzibar and I am sure, they can grow in the sultanate, too. I will also be cultivating rice on a bigger area.'
