'X-Men' sequel eclipses 'Alice' during US Memorial Day weekend

(MENAFN- AFP) Superhero sequel "X-Men: Apocalypse" debuted as the top movie at North American box-offices this Memorial day weekend with ticket sales of $65 million, industry figures showed on Sunday.

In the United States, the three-day holiday weekend -- the unofficial start of summer -- is popular with moviegoers, and cinemas generally do a booming business, although box office watchers remarked that ticket sales this year have been uncharacteristically light.

Disney's "Alice Through the Looking Glass" opened in the number two spot, selling $28.1 million in tickets.

"The Angry Birds Movie" was third with $18.7 million.

Another comic book-themed flick, "Captain America: Civil War," was fourth with $15.1 million, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.

"Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising," grossed $9.1 million for fifth place.

Rounding out the top 10 were:

-- "The Jungle Book" ($6.9 million)

-- "The Nice Guys" ($6.3 million)

-- "Money Monster" ($4.2 million)

-- "Love and Friendship" ($2.5 million)

-- "Zootopia" ($831,000)
