UAE aims to become green capital of world

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The third addition of the World Green Economy Summit (WGES) has been announced in the presence of Thani Al Zeyoudi, the UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment and Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice- Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy.
A Press conference was held to announce the agenda of the two-day summit, which will happen on October 5 and 6. Know the Clean Energy Strategy The Clean Energy Strategy launched in 2015 aims to provide 7 per cent of Dubai's energy from solar sources by 2020, 25 per cent by 2030 and 75 per cent from clean energy by 2050. The WGES 2016 will position Dubai as a global capital of green economy and the seat of the development of dedicated green business zones and maintain WGES as the premier international platform for sustainable development. Also, the summit aims to support Vision 2021 to achieve healthy and sustainable clean environment focusing on Energy strategy launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai last year. The strategy aims to provide 7 per cent of Dubai's energy from solar sources by 2020, 25 per cent by 2030 and 75 per cent from clean energy by 2050. The WGES targets to help Dubai become a global centre for Clean Energy & Energy Conservation by 2050. Speaking at the event HE Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, Vice-Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy said: "This year's programme will focus on how to further the Global Green Economy agenda whilst outlining and positioning the UAE's vision and Dubai plan 2021. International reports by UN indicate that doubling today's share of renewable energy in the global energy mix could save $2.4 trillion yearly, which exceeds total costs by 15 times. "The United Nations environment expects the size of the global market for products and services to have doubled to $2.74 by end of 2020." With the perspective of making this summit successful in terms of achieving sustainability, the programme is designed to cover key topics like green finance, solar energy and transforming cities through people and technology. Fronde Mauring, UN Resident Development Programme representative in UAE said: "The summit demonstrates UAE's willingness to exert leadership in innovative approaches to green economy developments building on its pioneering efforts and vision."
