Oman- 21 students awarded at 10th Annual Children's Writing Competition

Twenty one students between the age group of 11 and 18 years were awarded at the 10th Annual Children's Writing Competition on Saturday. Organised by the Let's Read Committee, entries for the competition were invited from various schools in the sultanate.

Students had to submit colourfully illustrated 500-word stories (English or Arabic) set in Oman suitable for young children. The stories were judged on the following criteria: Interesting characters, exciting plot, Omani setting, well-written text, and colourful illustrations.

Speaking about the event Jane Jaffer, author and organiser of the event said, 'The Let's Read campaign is an initiative to engage youngsters into the habit of reading. We have been having the event for several years and have also published three books of short stories from the winners in past few years.

'We have participants from everywhere around the country and the stories written were mesmerising. The first published book was called Tales with a Twist (2009) followed by Stories from Oman (2012) and finally My Home Town in 2016. Most of these books had over 40 best short stories.' The competition was judged by Nalini Subramanian, Sonia Carr, Aswani Deoras and Jane Jaffer.
