With hardly two weeks left for Ramadan, the authorities have stepped up efforts to fight begging, which tends to increase during the holy month

The Ministry of Interior has directed its relevant sectors and different police general headquarters in the UAE to implement the comprehensive awareness campaign under the theme 'Fight Begging'. The campaign aims at stamping out the 'objectionable phenomenon' and boost security awareness among the public educating them on the risks of sympathising with beggars.

Report begging

Residents urged not to hesitate to report beggars in residential areas and buildings, by calling the police operations room on the emergency number 999 or the Aman service on 8002626 or by SMS to 2828.

Police teams and other security authorities will be intensifying patrols and increasing their presence in public places across the country during the campaign.

These efforts will be complemented by a comprehensive awareness campaign implemented by the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of His Highness Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, via various media.

Reiterating the ministry's relentless commitment to combat the menace that tarnish the outlook of the country, Lt. General Saif Abdullah Al Sha'far, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Interior, said: "Begging opens the door for some people to indulge in various forms of deception and fraud to seek alms from people, and exploiting their tendency for charitable work during the holy month."

Lt. General Al Sha'far called upon the public to make donations for the poor through appropriate channels during Ramadan.

He also stressed the need to address various other topics that tarnish the civilised image of the country through a clear methodology and with the help of contemporary media.

Major General Omair Muhammad Al Muhairi, Director General of Police Operations at Abu Dhabi Police, warned the public against beggars' attempts to exploit the generosity of people who wanted to do humanitarian activities during Ramadan.

"Some immoral people take begging as an occupation that threatens the security of society, as it could often be a prelude to commit petty crimes, such as robberies," he said.

The MoI urged community members not to hesitate to report beggars in residential areas and buildings, by calling the police operations room on the emergency number 999 or the Aman service on 8002626 or by SMS to 2828.
