Doha: The Education Guidance Department at the Ministry of Education and Coastal Qatar organised a session titled ‘Modern styles in Teaching Physical Education for Early Years’.

The seminar-cum-training session was held by Wim van Gelder, PE expert at Council of Education in the Netherlands, at the sports hall of Heteen School.

It aim was aligned to Qatar National Vision 2030 — First Pillar ‘Human Development’ — to create a healthy population in Qatar, which begins by nurturing kids with a new and interesting way of fitness regime.

Wim stressed the need for an improved physical education curriculum in Qatar and offered expertise to participants.

‘Everybody moves’ is the basic concept of this modern style of PE teaching. Wim provided a comparative study of PE teaching in the 80s and the present curriculum.

He outlined drawbacks in the current methods in which the less efficient kids are neglected and there are limited activities for each kid. He showcased the new way of ‘PE teaching’ by having 15 kids in three groups involved in different activities. Every kid did an activity continuously without guidance by staff.

Wim also highlighted advantages of ‘differential training’ which proved to be an innate factor for successful sports people.

The kids enjoyed the session and felt active and energetic. Around 100 PE teachers from government, private and international schools attended.

The teachers were impressed by the new methodology and expressed keenness to adapt the new system. The programme was headed by Al Jawahara Al Eedan, Headmistress of the school and hosted by Hiam Al Gharabat and Lina Zukari from the ministry. Junu Chandy Kurian, Emad Izmegna, Ramkumar and Mohamed El Sheikh coordinated from Coastal Qatar. Certificates were issued to the participants by the ministry.
