DOHA: The Cultural Village Foundation-Katara has launched its latest documentary book Qatar Traditional Ships compiled by a team of researchers at the Studies and Research Committee.

“It’s my pleasure to welcome you today as we mark the launch of another Katara milestone publication. The book, a documentation in words, images and paintings, captures all recorded literature related to old Arabian ship; its tradition, manufacture, design, types, names, famous owners and captains, literature, poetry and paintings which tackle the issue and themes of dhows, one of world’s most graceful sailing crafts,” said Dr Nadia Al Madahka, Director, Research Department, told a press conference.

“The book, through information and photographs, also depicts the unique relationship between Qataris and sailing ships, a major tool used for fishing and coastal trade.”

Dr Al Madahka stressed that the book is in line with Katara’s mission to revive Qatar’s marine heritage, boost national identity in the community and document the relationship between the new generations and their past, traditions and history.

Arab dhows are strongly present at the cultural and heritage scene of Qatar, blending the past with modernity, and telling the stories of Qatari ancestors to their children and youth.

“The old Arab wooden dhows are considered one of the top and most glorious features of Qatari and Arabian Gulf heritage over centuries, particularly in the pre-oil discovery era, when the dhows were used for fishing, pearl-diving, transportation, trade and other commercial activities,” she explained.

Dr Al Madahka extended gratitude to Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager, Katara, renowned Qatari researcher Ali Bin Shabeeb Al Mana’ie, the Studies and Research Committee and all those who contributed to the production of the book.

Katara has issued documentary books on Qatar’s heritage, including Diving for Pearls; Castles and Forts; The Good Say About the Great Founder; The Traditional Dance (Al Ardha) of Qataris; The Carrier-Pigeon; Qatar in the Qatari Journalism; and The Book of Classical Poets in Qatar, among others.
