Rabat –The Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Training, Lahcen Daoudi, is expected to attend the Commission of Education and Communication in the House of Representative today to discuss the upsurge of university violence in Morocco.

The debate was set after a sixteen-year-old girl was assaulted at the Faculty of Science at Moulay Ismail University in Meknes on May 18.

A group of students attacked the girl, who works in the university's cafeteria, binding her hands, covering her eyes with a cotton shawl and forcibly shaving her hair in front of a crowd.

Six students who were suspected to have participated directly in the physical assault of the girl were arrested.

Acts of violence on Moroccan university campuses have increased in recent years.

In January, two students were killed in Marrakech and Agadir during clashes between Amazigh and Sahraoui students. In April 2014, a student was killed at the Faculty of Science of Fes, after being attacked with knives by a group of students.
