Oman- 83% parents happy with private schools in sultanate, finds survey

Eighty-three per cent parents are happy with the quality of education in private schools in Oman, according to the Satisfaction Index Survey conducted by the National Centre for Statistics and Information.

The quality of education and efficiency of teachers scored 88 per cent, followed by facilities and infrastructure (85 per cent), assessment mechanisms and engagement with parents (83 per cent) while the financial costs of education scored 75 per cent. Curriculum at private schools logged 94 per cent, followed by the safety of children at 93 per cent. Focus on moral and religious values and traditions as well as support for children with special needs received a score of 91 per cent. Among the lowest scores are for transport service and food offered at school cafes with both scoring 79 per cent while sports and games courts scored 80 per cent.

The progress report of students scored 88 per cent in terms of ease of comprehension, accurate assessment of their capabilities and keenness of authorities to communicate their status to parents. Organising seminars, events and other activities related to the curriculum and the involvement of parents in such functions scored 71 per cent while school authorities' initiative in encouraging parents to join school boards and accepting parents' views and suggestions scored 80 per cent.

The level of satisfaction with respect to the cost of field trips and various activities stood at 85 per cent while the cost of school uniforms got a score of 84 per cent. Tuition fee scored 59 per cent while transportation charges scored 61 per cent.

The results of the poll showed that three out of every five parents preferred private schools over government ones because of better quality of education and curriculum. Three out of every five (59 per cent) Omani students in private schools use school bus while 38 per cent use private transportation.

The average annual cost of education per student in special education schools is RO2,000 (post-primary) and RO1,200 in kindergarten and basic education.
