Iraqi PM announces start of operation to liberate Fallujah

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BAGHDAD, May 22 (KUNA) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi announced Sunday night the unleashing of a military offensive to recapture Fallujah city in the central province of Al-Anbar from the so-called Islamic State (IS) group.

"The Iraqi army will soon hoist high the national flag in Fallujah again. It is time to liberate the city and defeat IS completely," he said in a televised speech from the joint operations command this midnight.

"The black flags of the strangers (IS militants) who kidnapped the city, will disappear for ever," Al-Abadi vowed.

He noted that the military offensive is backed by the security forces, the popular mobilization paramilitary troops and local tribal militias. (end) ahh.gb
