(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, May 22 (KUNA) -- Al Sadu Weaving Cooperative Society (Beit Al Sadu or as commonly known Sadu House) will forever remain a platform that encourages creative people in the art of weaving, Honorary President Sheikha Altaf Salem AlAli AlSabah said Sunday.
Sheikha Altaf made the statement to KUNA after opening the 17th Annual Exhibition of the Kuwait Textile Arts Association (KTAA).
Patronizing the two-day event, Sheikha Altaf said it is the outcome of the hard work by talented people who need to be appreciated. She urged people to visit the exhibition, lauding the tableau that won first place prize.
The exhibition displays art works by competitors and trainees of the KTAA, which lies under the umbrella of Al-Sadu House, she said.
The House will always back their talents and forever be proud of them, Sheikha Altaf said.
In addition, she stressed the significance of the cultural heritage, referring to it as "an identity and a root." Haifaa Al-Mughni, who won first prize, said that it took her a whole month of intensive work, using 3,400 tiny pieces of 14 different materials. She highly appreciated honoring her and the artistic piece.
Beit Al Sadu was launched in 1978, as a private initiative, by a group of concerned Kuwaitis who wished to preserve a fast disappearing, yet intrinsic, cultural identity. Thus, the Al Sadu Project was founded.
In 1991, soon after the Liberation of Kuwait, the Sadu Project was transformed into Al Sadu Weaving Co-operative Society, a venture owned and run by the weavers and artisans themselves, with all profits going to shareholders.
The Society is managed by members of a board of shareholders and an advisory committee headed by the Patron and Honorary President Sheikha Altaf. (end) akw.msa
